HIRING A PAINTING CONTRACTOR – TIPS & ADVICE
It is very common today for homeowners to have their painting done by contractors. This is due to the level of professionalism and knowledge of all aspects of the work involved, including cleaning and surface preparation.
Axolotl has provided a checklist to make choosing a reputable and reliable painting contractor a little less stressful.
Specify the work: Each contractor must quote for the same work, so prepare a simple list of the work required. Specify exactly where is getting painted, which colour you want as well as the sheen level, type of paint, and when you need it completed by.
Gather quotes: Talk with a range of contractors, making sure each are given the same information so you know you are getting the best possible price.
What is the painting process? Ask for the contractors painting process. This includes:
Surface preparation
Priming (type and brand)
Finish coats (type of paint, gloss level, brand, colours, and number of coats).
How will the surrounding areas be protected? How will the contractor protect the areas around the painting project? For example drop sheets.
Time frame of job: When will work commence and conclude? How many painters will be working on the job?
Warranty: Is there a warranty on the work? Does it cover labour and materials or just labour? How long is the warranty, and what is the remedy if there are any failures?
Recommendations: Previous customers make great references for work, ask the contractors you speak with for a list of some previous clients.
Presentation: Is the contractor professional looking and appropriately dressed? A messy appearance may indicate a lack of care on the job.
Response: Is the contractor reliable, fast responding, and seems to be genuinely interested in your job?
Paint quality: Insist on a top quality product, this may cost a little more money, however you will save in the long run as the paint will last.
Once all of this has been taken into account, you can then go ahead and make an informed decision on which contractor would be the best choice for your job.
