OPTIMISING TOUCH-UPS

Spot applications to touch-up a painted surface can result in a varying appearance to the previously painted surface. This can be due to a number of factors including the age and exposure of the original painted surface.

Below we outline the variations to be aware of, and how you can get the best results for your touch-up:

A. Difference in Appearance

  1. Colour: the hue of the newly applied paint could be lighter or darker.

  2. Sheen: sheen or gloss can differentiate; the touch-up area may be higher in sheen than the surrounding area, or vice versa. The direction of application could also pick up the light in a different way to the original surface.

  3. Profile: touch-ups can be noticeable depending on how much is re-applied, resulting in an uneven surface.

B. Touch-up Variables

  1. Different temperatures: If the temperature is higher or lower than the original application temperature it could result in a difference of appearance or sheen.

  2. Different methods of application: Where possible/known use the same method of application to avoid a varying appearance, i.e. a brush or a roller.

  3. Surfaces of differing porosity: for example, applying satin paint to unprimed (porous) wallboard will result in a lower sheen than will develop when the same paint is applied over itself when touching up.

  4. Touching up a surface using higher sheers such as satin or gloss tend to show more differences than flat bases.

C. Tips for Avoiding Touch-up Problems

  1. Apply an appropriate primer before painting.

  2. Appropriately tint base/colorant type/colorant level per litre to match existing. Where possible use left over paint from the original project.

  3. Some painters find it helpful to immediately back roll after spraying, to purposely make a less uniform surface that touches up well with careful rolling.

  4. Touch-up within about + - 10 °C of the original application temperature. Do not apply paint in temperatures above or below the directions on the paint tin.

  5. Thinly apply the touch up paint with a foam brush if the surface was originally sprayed. Don’t force dry the touch-up.

For best results, particularly when working with dark colours, or external applications, it is recommended to repaint the entire surface.
